MASLENITSA– The Russian Spring Festival

“Farewell to Winter”

Russians, like Indians, are very fond of festivals. The winter season dominates the climate of Russia, lingering for almost eight months. Maslenitsa is traditionally celebrated to bid farewell to the long winter and to welcome the Spring.

Maslenitsa (Pancake week) is the only purely Russian Holiday that dates back to the pagan times. The most characteristic element of Maslenitsa is bliny (Russian pancakes), popularly taken to symbolize the sun. It is as round, golden and warm as the sun. Pancakes are served hot with either butter, or sour cream, or caviar, or mushrooms, or sturgeon – to any exquisite taste.

Another special attraction is the burning of the straw effigy of a lady, personifying the end of the cruel Winter.

Maslenitsa is a festival of mass celebration with lots of fun, games that includes traditions troika rides, sledding, snowball fights, theater, puppets, singing, dances and fireworks are all a part of the Maslenitsa celebrations.

All in all, Maslenitsa is a good excuse to go out and have a good time, eat until you burst, and do something you wouldn’t do any other time of the year.

You will have all of these in our festival that would provide you a glimpse of the Russian culture and its affinity with the Indian culture.
